By Popular Demand, People's Open Market Permanently Relocating To āina Moana (Magic Island)
By popular demand, People's Open Market permanently relocating to ʻĀinaMoana (Magic Island)
Monday market, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m, was previously located at Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park
Honolulu -- After positive feedback from both customers and vendors, the People's Open Market previously held at Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park will be permanently relocated to the ʻĀinaMoana (Magic Island) parking lot in Ala Moana Regional Park.
The temporary relocation of this specific market, which runs every Monday 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. except on holidays, began when maintenance work required the closure of Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park in January 2018.
The park closure provided the Department of Parks and Recreation with the opportunity to test the new site. This open market was already slated for permanent relocation due to the planned incorporation of a portion of Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park into the future Pohukaina Elementary School.
Based on popularity of the new site with park visitors, and the increased vendor participation, the decision was made to permanently relocate this open market ahead of schedule.
"I'm happy this relocation has been received so well by the park users and vendors," said Mayor Kirk Caldwell. "It makes complete sense to have our People's Open Market located at Ala Moana Regional Park, the People's Park, to help local merchants provide park users with fresh produce at one of the most popular locations in the entire state."
The People's Open Market program began in 1973, under the direction of then Mayor Frank. F. Fasi and his wife Mrs. Joyce Fasi, as a way for farmers to sell "off-grade", surplus produce and natural goods at a discounted price.
Today there are 25 People's Open Markets that operate in neighborhoods across Oʻahu.
